About Me
I'm Sijo Johnson, an independent cybersecurity researcher, bug bounty hunter, and freelancer from Kerala, India.
How I Got Here
Like every kid's dream, mine was also hacking. The black terminal, green code, the Matrix rain. I loved it.
After HSE, I tried to join BCA. Some issues came up, and I had to drop it. I moved to design instead, finished my course, and worked a few jobs. But hacking stayed with me. Slowly, the word hacking changed into cybersecurity.
I collected courses and resources, and finally decided to learn it properly. I started my cybersecurity journey. But even after completing the course, something felt missing. I wasn't satisfied. I struggled to get a job without a degree, and language was also an issue.
I don't have a formal degree. But I don't think a degree decides how capable someone is. Real experience comes from trying, failing, and starting again.
From the course, one new thing I found was bug bounty. After finishing CEH, I looked deeper into bug bounty and decided to stick with it, and stop hunting for a job. Bug bounty can pay more in a month than someone with 5 years of job experience.
Fact is, bug bounty can make anyone rich, easily.
Today, I've discovered and reported security issues affecting 100+ companies, while still learning and improving every day.
But the field is much harder than it looks. Finding a real bug is hard. If you find one, reporting and validation is another fight. Even if it's valid, someone else may have reported it first. And even when everything is right, some companies scam you, patch it quietly, or just don't reply.
All this made the field hard. It made me cry. The first year, I struggled. The second year, I tried a new way of learning. By the third year, I finally feel safe in this field.
Bug bounty taught me much more than finding bugs. It taught me discipline, consistency, patience, communication, professionalism, handling pressure, accepting criticism, and how to keep moving forward even when things don't go your way.
I still don't look for a regular job. I prefer freelancing. Late night hunts, late wake-ups, late breakfast. It makes me a bit lazy, honestly. I know I'm not a great employee. That's why freelancing works for me. People choose me for my work, and I never let them down.
If you want to know what I'm really like, don't ask me. Ask someone who has worked with me or who knows me. Their word is my signature.
I still have a lot of pending plans. I'm working on all of them.
Why I Like Being Independent
The 9-to-5 life was never really my dream. I like working independently, making my own decisions, and having the freedom to choose what I work on. I don't want my entire life to revolve around someone else's rules, deadlines, or definition of success. That doesn't mean I can't work with people. I enjoy meeting people who are better than me at something, learning from them, and building things together. Teach me something new today, and there's a good chance we'll end up doing a collaboration someday.
The Bigger Dream
Cybersecurity is something I genuinely enjoy, but it isn't the only thing I dream about. My long-term goal is simple: retire early. Not to sit around doing nothing. I imagine a quieter life with farming, gardening, cooking, and creating things, and having enough freedom to spend my time doing what I actually enjoy. Maybe I'll still be hunting bugs. Maybe I'll be hunting potatoes and tomatoes instead.
Until then, I'm still learning, still struggling, still experimenting, and still figuring things out.
Just keep learning. Keep building. Keep moving.
One thing I believe: everyone is vulnerable, and everyone makes mistakes.
So be polite, be kind, be quiet. No one is better than you. You just have to give yourself a chance.
Certifications
CPT: Certified Penetration Tester
CEH: Certified Ethical Hacker
Skills
Education & Training
I still learn every day: YouTube videos, writeups, CTF challenges, workshops, all of it. Right now I'm going deeper into network security, cloud pentesting, and malware analysis. In this field, learning never really stops, and I don't plan to either.
